Yoga at Home - Creating Sacred Space

Yoga at home, a time of self-exploration through YOUR practice.

I personally love that feeling of unrolling my mat, lighting a few candles and getting set up for my practice. Of course, this is by no means essential. The original yogis thousands of years ago, certainly didn't worry about what type of yoga mat they had nor was there any importance to a scented candle. We don't need these things, of course, BUT if you have the time and space to, it can be fun, creative and inspiring to create some space especially for your practice.

It doesn't need to be a whole room for your yoga, it might just been a small space where you can gather some inspiring things. Your sacred space could simply be a shelf, window sill or a corner of a room.

Creating Sacred Space

But all space is sacred, I hear you cry!

Yes, absolutely, but this is just about maximising the space through intention + positive vibes...

Let's get the most out of it.

* * * * * * * *

Not only is this a place to practice yoga... but it also is for:

Meditation

Reading books

Drinking tea

Relaxing before bed

Writing a journal

Reflecting on your day

Breathing / Pranayama

Listening to podcasts or audio books (my new favourite thing to do...)

Keep the Space Clean & Tidy

The act of tidying the space could even be part of your yoga practice. Mindful tidying can be therapeutic, relaxing and get yourself into the right mindset before you unroll your mat. When our surroundings are less clustered and messy, this can effect our state of mind and being. Clearer space, clearer mind.

Play Music

If you enjoy listening to music and it adds to your practice then its always nice to play in the background. However, I do also know the value of practicing without music. If I am meditating or doing a restorative practice, I prefer silence. If you'd like some inspiration, please find my spotify account below and you can listen to my playlists I've created.

Lighting - Candles & Fairy Lights

Perfect way to make a space feel more inviting and relaxing is lighting. Especially as its winter here in the UK, candles certainly make the room feel more cosy. If you want a little more light love, fairy lights are great to add a bit of sparkle.

Burn incense or Palo Santo

We can awaken our senses through the scents we have around us. If I need a little energetic pick me up, I love burning palo santo.

how to use:

I usually burn a tiny bit for 30 seconds, blow it out then waft the smoke around myself - yep, we are stepping into major hippie vibes territory now my friends. Of course, be cautious to not smoke yourself out, that wouldn't good! Place the palo santo into a heatproof dish afterwards to catch any ash. And then enjoy the healing zen scent!

It could be a photograph, an inspirational quote/affirmation, a bunch of flowers, crystals, a print or some art. Use your intuition to seek out what objects or things you would love to be surrounded by. Bring them into your space, see how they feel and if it adds to the "zen den" feel then keep them there.

Change it Up

Allow your space to evolve...I often move things around, swap and take things out from time to time. You will find that the space might change as you do. Maybe we like less things around us when we are looking for some mental clarity. Or you may notice you introduce bright colours into your space to elevate your mood and emotional wellbeing.

OK...so you are now ready to delve into your practice, meditation or maybe even have a quick nap in this space.

Whatever it is, let this space just simply be a reminder.

A reminder to step into presence and affirming your inner wisdom today and all the days that follow.
